The “jurassic world” is a movie that was released in 1993 and is still being watched today. It tells the story of a park full of dinosaurs that have escaped and are wreaking havoc on the world.
RETRO MOVIE – Jurassic Park, based on Michael Crichton’s book, was released in 1993 as one of Steven Spielberg’s most important and legendary monster movies. The picture was a critical and commercial triumph, starting a series that has spawned four sequels to far, with the fifth, Jurassic Park: World Domination, set to hit theaters next week.
With Jurassic World: World Domination, the sixth and ‘final’ installment in the Jurassic Saga, about to hit theaters in a few weeks, I decided to revisit each film in the series — with the support of Pannonia Entertainment in Hungary, which is playing all of the films before the sixth installment. Not only did I do this to renew myself, but it also allowed me to experience each film with fresh eyes. Let’s start with the original Jurassic Park, which I watched on the day it was released, June 11, 1993. I’ve watched it hundreds of times in the decades since then, mainly in fragments on cable. However, viewing it from start to finish without ads is a whole other experience. It’s easy to understand why Jurassic Park has lasted so long in popular culture.
A basic scenario in which the only goal is to survive.
The straightforward, uncomplicated screenplay, which nonetheless gives away all the vital information, was the first thing that struck me upon re-watching. Sure, Michael Crichton’s original concept of cloning dinosaurs in the contemporary day and placing them in an amusement park is amazing, but Crichton and David Koepp’s modified screenplay is so well-crafted and lively that it could be taught in a screenwriting class.
The viewer gets provided numerous essential bits of information without even realizing it from the very first scene, and then it flawlessly transitions to the next segment. We begin with a worker who is assassinated by an unknown monster. In the following scene, we witness a lawsuit over his death, and we see a mosquito imprisoned in amber for the first time. We cut to Alan Grant (Sam Neill), who opens the film’s whole third act, after a character acknowledges him. With an offer from the park’s owner, John Hammond (Richard Attenborough), Jurassic Park is off to the races in no time.
There is no “mythology” here yet.
Throughout the film, this economy of narrative is maintained. There isn’t a single moment that doesn’t advance the plot or give important character development. And, for the most part, the tale is plain. When Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), and Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) arrive on the island, they learn about dinosaurs and ask inquiries before heading to the park. That’s all there is to it. We add the kids Tim and Lex (Joseph Mazzello, Ariana Richards) to heighten the emotional stakes and the Nedry (Wayne Knight) tale to further complicate matters, but people are soon walking through a dinosaur-infested amusement park.
To add to the simplicity, Jurassic Park is almost devoid of the mythology that has grown up around it. We learn more about John Hammond’s firm, InGen, as well as his personal life, friends, competitors, and other corporations competing for his findings in following films. The globe is rapidly growing. That, however, is not a part of this picture. We don’t know who paid Nedry to take the embryos, and we don’t know who Dodgson is. We don’t give a damn. It’s not about the outside world; it’s about the tale, the people, and the struggle to stay alive.
Instead of the turmoil of today’s world, perfect action scenarios were created.
The pure perfection of the action sequences was another thing I noticed during the re-watch. We are used to frantic action these days: rapid cuts, explosions, flying cameras, and almost nonstop pandemonium. That is not the case in Jurassic Park. You know precisely where each character is at all times, in every scenario. Any spectator could identify exactly where the actors are in relation to one other if you paused at any moment during, say, the first T-Rex assault, thanks to Spielberg’s direction and editing, which only adds to the drama.
This is a technique used by the director in every scene, with one witty, probably deliberate exception: by the time the Velociraptors corner Tim and Lex in the kitchen, we are so used to knowing who is where at all times that we are genuinely terrified when we see Lex trying to close the booth door and the raptor pounces on him. Then Spielberg pulls the rug out from under our feet. The adrenaline surge is beautifully intensified when the raptor crashes and Lex is saved when we realize the raptor has seen a reflection. This sequence works so effectively because all of the scenes leading up to it are expertly crafted to ensure that the viewer trusts and understands what they are watching.
A distinct ambiance
Spielberg also ensures that the characters experience the same sense of awe that we, the viewer, should. Grant and Sattler physically and emotionally respond to the disclosures they witness on film in various situations, whether it’s the T-Rex in Jurassic Park or the beauty in a sick Triceratops. Even though Grant is relieved as he glances out the helicopter window at the conclusion, he is still amazed.
The fact that the characters on television are enthralled by the spectacle and happenings allows the spectator to be enthralled as well. No one is exhausted. No one is a crook (OK, Nedry is corrupt, and we see where that leads). Everyone is absolutely awestruck by the park’s charm and terror. It creates an atmosphere that, if my memory serves me well, only appears in a few other films in the series, making this one genuinely unique.
It’s also thanks to everyone who worked on the film’s excellent job. Although the storyline and directing have previously been noted, ILM’s digital effects, particularly the T-Rex, are still near-perfect 30 years later. Every time I hear John Williams’ music in context, it truly – and I mean literally this time – brings tears to my eyes. With hundreds of people working on a wonderful concept and building something that lasts longer than any of us could have imagined, Jurassic Park is the conclusion of hundreds of people working on a fantastic idea and making something that lasts longer than any of us could have imagined.
There were few logical errors, but overall it was a fantastic experience.
This film is less than flawless due to a few of strange logical flaws. How did John Hammond get inside Grant and Sattler’s Montana trailer, for example? We see the chopper approaching, but how did he get there unseen by the rest of us? Was he on his feet? Or should I go by car?
I also can’t understand the improbable, illogical luck of a) finding a mosquito preserved in amber at all, but then b) this mosquito is 65-100 million years old, not, say, 20 million or 2 million or some other number; c) this mosquito sucked the blood of a dinosaur right before it got stuck in the sap, and then d) they find enough mosquitoes to get enough DNA to recreate all the different species of dinosaurs. It must have been like winning the jackpot every week for a year to discover a mosquito that contained viable dinosaur blood. But where do you look for more than one? It’s a game of enormous proportions. Yes, it’s a science fiction film, but at the very least the main notion has a scientific basis and internal logic.
Despite its logical flaws, Spielberg’s Jurassic Park remains one of his finest pictures, and it’s still a fantastic experience by today’s standards. The storyline, directing, acting, editing, and graphics are all excellent, and no sequel or other monster film has tried to match it since.
