Legendary game composer Koichi Sugiyama, the man behind the music for Dragon Quest and other iconic Nintendo games, has passed away at age 90. The world of video games is mourning his loss.

Koichi Sugiyama, a composer for the Dragon Quest series has died at age 90. He was also a pianist and a conductor.

Square Enix has announced that Japanese composer Koichi Sugiyama died of septic shock on September 30, 2021, at the age of 90. Sugiyama is best known for creating the music for the massively famous Dragon Quest series, which he has contributed over 500 songs to. Sugiyama was the oldest video game composer, according to Guinness World Records.

The following is a machine translation of Sugiyama’s obituary from Square Enix:

Koichi Sugiyama has worked on the soundtrack for our game “Dragon Quest” series for many years, contributing to the series’ growth. The dead wrote all of the almost 500 songs in the “Dragon Quest” series alone, and his last project was “Dragon Quest XII Chosen Fate no Haze.” I’m sorry, but I don’t think we’ll be able to continue working on it together, but the music from “Dragon Quest” will live on in your memories and in the universe of the game “Dragon Quest.” I’ll be there. We want to convey our greatest admiration and appreciation for Koichi S ugiyama’s accomplishments throughout his life.

Only close family and relatives’ relatives attended the burial and goodbye ceremony. Due to the desires of the grieving family, please abstain from sending condolences, incense, offerings, flowers, and other such items. We are arranging a goodbye celebration for everyone at a later date, but the timing and other details are still being worked out. Please accept my sincere gratitude for your patience.

Sugiyama, who was born on April 11, 1931, started composing music in high school before beginning his professional career at Fuji TV. Adult Manga, The Hit Parade, and Shinshun Kakushigei Taikai were among the shows he directed.

Sugiyama has received the following awards:

  • In 1988, “Symphonic Suite Dragon Quest III” won the 30th Japan Record Award for Special Planning.
  • “Dragon Quest III and to the Legend…” received the 3rd Gold Disc Award in the planning category in 1989.
  • Guinness World Records certified him as “the world’s oldest composer of gaming music” in 2016.
  • In the fall of 2018, he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun.
  • Received the “Silver Award” from the JASRAC in 2020.
