With the Open Wheel Championships coming to an end, players are now left with a choice of either remaining in Assetto Corsa Competizione or moving on. With free mods and updates guaranteed for life, players who move onto other simulators might be missing out on some great racing action.

The “assetto corsa competizione best car for each track” is a racing game developed by Kunos Simulazioni. The game was released on November 16, 2018.

REVIEW – If you’re getting a sense of déjà vu, it’s because this is the third time we’ve seen Kunos Simulazioni’s game. I’m not talking about the original Assetto Corsa, but rather the one with the term Competizione added to the title: the racing game is now in its third edition… it’s getting a little ridiculous. 505 Games, on the other hand, will profit from it once again.

I’d rather not put down my ideas if the completely crap local currency continues to sink into the sh tter in the next weeks.

I should mention that this cast of characters is from the game’s new generation of platforms, since the PC version was released on May 29, 2019, followed by the PlayStation 4/Xbox One version on June 23, 2020, all published by 505 Games. They’ve made the Unreal Engine 4-powered game available for the two consoles that will be launched in November 2020. It’s not on par with iRacing or rFactor, particularly considering how Assetto Corsa Competizione lacks material. Also, on the PS4/X1, it wasn’t all that technically advanced. However, the release of a new version for consoles is justifiable since it is considerably closer to the PC original. Anyone who already owns it on a 2013 system will be relieved to see that 505 Games does not charge for the update, which is well worth it considering the game played at 30 frames per second on the previous platforms. Backwards compatibility on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series accomplished more than that, as predicted, but Assetto Corsa Competizione takes it a step further. 4K at 60 frames per second, as I believe is required for racing games? (I’ll be surprised if Gran Turismo 7 doesn’t achieve that frame rate since there is no ray tracing when racing on PlayStation 5!) Sure, there’s a performance hit now and again (particularly when there are a lot of vehicles on the circuit and the weather isn’t ideal), but that’s about it.

Unfortunately, there are still numerous flaws, particularly with the mirror. I’m not sure whether it’s a fair comparison, but I believe Viper Racing from 1998 was my first PC game in 2003 (no jokes, please). Why couldn’t it be done here if THAT GAME had a completely working and faultless mirror (and where were the multi-core computers and gigaflops back then?). On the other side, I can think of a few things that are favorable. The shadows created by the trees on the track, for example, and the weather effects are rather impressive, and the loading times have been greatly decreased compared to their console counterparts. On PlayStation 5, the DualSense capabilities are used, although they might have been better (I’m fairly positive the functionality is more complete in Codemasters’ titles). So there are improvements here as well, but the game might have been improved much more. However, I do not deny that it is a huge upgrade over previous consoles.

Assetto Corsa Competizione is also more robust in terms of content, thanks to PC upgrades (which have fine-tuned the physics and balanced the performance of the cars), and depending on the version, everything from BMW to Mercedes is included, as well as a new track, Imola. The product, which concentrates on GT4, GT3, and the official Blancpain GT series, does not disappoint in this regard, and anybody who wants a bespoke field-of-view (FoV) choice will be pleased, so the cockpit, interior-view camera position is ideal.

On paper, thirty vehicles are competing for victory instead of twenty-four, which is a positive thing, but novice console gamers may expect disappointment in practice due to the lack of cross-play. This is where it would have been appropriate to put PC players against PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series players (despite the fact that PC players may have an edge over DualSense/controller players due to their steering wheel and pedal solution). or, at the very least, cross-play across consoles from the same family (PlayStation 5 vs. PlayStation 4, Xbox Series vs. Xbox One). There were technological challenges here, since the PS4/X1 version lacks lobbies, and 60 frames per second would have given couch potatoes competing on 2020 consoles a significant edge. However, cross-play between PC/PS5/XS should have been enabled. It’s a massive missed opportunity, and I’ll say that right now: it’s why the game didn’t get an eight out of 10! What a pity.

I stayed on course.

Because it’s still a little weak technically, there’s no cross-play, and I anticipate Gran Turismo 7 will wash it off the track, the new-gen edition of Assetto Corsa Competizione only earns a seven and a half out of ten. It’s better than the previous console version (FoV, even private lobbies, mostly consistent performance, and increased content), and it’s physically capable of standing up to the competition. So it’s a decent game, but I’d suggest playing it on a powerful PC if you have one around. It’s a cost-effective choice for PlayStation 5/Xbox Series, particularly if you have the PlayStation 4/Xbox One version. It served its purpose.

Pro:

+ Its performance is generally satisfactory + There are more automobiles on the circuit, private lobbies, and FoV modifications

Against:

– There is no cross-play between the new consoles and the PC! – Technically, there are still some flaws — it isn’t very good at anything; it will sink (especially with the arrival of GT7)
