FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2.0 was formally unveiled by AMD today, and the first question on everyone’s mind is how much better it looks than the previous version. Based on a video created in conjunction with Arkane Studios, which shows the developer’s newest FPS, Deathloop, operating with the new temporal upscaling technique enabled, it seems to be really decent. AMD has already been bold enough to claim that FSR 2.0 provides “similar or better than native image quality at all resolutions,” but readers can decide for themselves whether that’s a stretch or not using the footage and comparison shots below. Deathloop will be one of the first games to use AMD FSR 2.0, which is set to be released in Q2 2022. Deathloop already supports AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS in its current version.
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 Announcement and First Look (AMD)
- AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 technology is a temporal upscaling solution with exceptional picture quality that is the culmination of years of upscaling research. It was designed from the ground up by AMD to produce visual quality that is comparable to or better than native and to assist enhance framerates in compatible games.
- FSR 2.0 temporal upscaling makes advantage of frame color, depth, and motion vectors in the rendering pipeline, as well as information from previous frames, to provide very high-quality upscaled output with optimized high-quality anti-aliasing. Spatial upscaling systems like FSR 1.0 depend on separate anti-aliasing built into a game’s rendering pipeline and utilize data from the current frame to build the upscaled output. FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 has much better picture quality than FSR 1.0 at all quality mode settings and screen resolutions due to these changes.
- FSR 2.0’s upscaling method, like FSR 1.0’s, does not employ Machine Learning (ML). While machine learning is one way to handle a variety of challenges, it is not required for high-quality upscaling. As a result, FSR 2.0 does not need specialist ML gear, allowing more players to take use of it. FSR 2.0 will work with a broad variety of products and platforms, including some competition graphics cards, much as FSR 1.0.
